The shell construction of the complex was completed at the beginning of March. Master carpenter Peter Heußen delivered the traditional topping-out speech. Every project has its own history. So too does the project for "large-scale" retail in Straelen have its story, which initially began when an external retail study found that Straelen was losing purchasing power to the surrounding towns and municipalities, because a large-scale full-range food retailer was missing and there was also a deficit in the area of drugstore products. Following corresponding resolutions by the town council of Straelen, the investor, the Tecklenburg company, put out a multiple commission to tender in mid-2016. Six architecture firms were invited to plan the "Ostwall" site creatively within defined framework conditions. The six different designs by the renowned architecture firms were assessed by a jury according to urban-planning, functional and economic aspects. In February 2017, the assessment commission concluded that the design by the architecture firm Fritschi + Stahl from Düsseldorf had best implemented the project in all respects, and in particular in keeping with the townscape of Straelen, and was thus awarded first place in the multiple commission. In the following months, the building-law foundations were laid and the building application submitted. In July 2018 the time had come: the building permit was granted by the district of Kleve. As early as September 2018, demolition work on the existing buildings began. In October 2018 the shell construction work for the Rewe/dm store was then started. Today's topping-out ceremony is a milestone! Favoured by the good weather, the shell was able to be completed in February 2019. The work was carried out by Tecklenburg employees. The entire Rewe complex is being built according to REWE’s own “Green Building” concept. The work and the materials used follow the environmental and energy standards specified for it. The entire planning and construction process is accompanied by an expert assessment. Customers and employees can already look forward to the new building today. The final completion and handover to Rewe and dm will take place in July 2019, so that the opening, after fitting-out, can be expected shortly after the summer holidays. On more than 2,500 square metres of floor space, the food store Rewe will offer its broad range.
