Time and again one hears or reads that there is a rural exodus and that the rural population increasingly faces a variety of problems. This problem applies less to the Lower Rhine and least of all to Straelen. There are exceptions in the district of Kleve, such as the village of Kervenheim, where there is no local supply and only limited medical care. Unaffected by such problems is how our home town of Straelen is to be assessed, where business revenues flow, new companies settle, and outsiders as well as newcomers describe Straelen as one of the most beautiful and attractive towns on the Lower Rhine. I do not want to absolve myself of tending to see the negative rather than to take pleasure in and also perceive the positive. A bicycle tour, for example, shows what excellently maintained sports facilities exist in Holt, Broekhuysen, Herongen and, of course, in Straelen on Römerstraße. In recent months there has been – on my part too – much excitement about the far too long construction period of Annastraße. After its completion, however, we are all happy and satisfied, and the Slooten building materials store as well as all the other tradespeople are now easily accessible again without problems. I think the idea of decorating a vacant shop unit at the beginning of Venloer Straße with beautiful portraits and paintings is wonderful. Every day I take pleasure in the view of a very appealingly designed shop window display instead of looking into gaping emptiness. Compliments also to the owners of the hairdressing salon Biek, who have created an attractive property in a prominent location that can hardly be surpassed in professionalism. Straelen is and remains worth living in and worth loving. The prince proclamation in the Bofrost hall was attended by 1,000 people, and our second-hand shop “tragbar” is sensationally successful and an enrichment for the town centre. As is known, we conducted negotiations for the ground floor of the “Markt Rose” with young people who would have liked to set up a restaurant in the form of a lounge in our town centre. Unfortunately, this plan will not become reality because the company in question has invested elsewhere.
